Terry Haddock Racing Report

Toronto Canada 05/21/05

Overcoming adversity and challenges has become something that the Haddock Racing Team is very familiar with. Having a sponsor move on to a top fuel team last year and running out of his own pocket on a limited schedule this year were enough, when the team unexpectedly had a crew member unable to make the trip to Canada things got a little stressful.

Terry had a long haul just to drive the rig from Seattle Washington all the way to Toronto Motorsports Park for the weekend's race. In fact he was still driving when the three remaining crewmembers landed in Buffalo on Friday night.

Arriving at the track on Saturday everything in the pit had to be set up and the car made ready to run in time for the first pass at 7:00 p.m. Then the rain started to fall and we all had feelings of the many rain delays or rainouts we've had on the NHRA tour.
The rain passed and we all felt a little bit better!

Going up to the line on a track we had not run on before with some new tune-up and clutch changes, we were a little concerned. Wanting to put on a good show for everyone and hoping that our tune-up was on the money, we had a fairly good first pass but not a perfect one. Terry pulled in to stage the car and somehow got both lights on before he had the fuel pumps all the way on. Because of this he left a bit late on the green giving the fuel system time to get full flow. The car left the line well but shook a little bit about 100 feet or so and he slapped the throttle once trying to get the car hooked up. It worked! The car ran well out to about 900 feet and broke a blower belt.
Coasting across the finish line the lights showed a middle five-second pass.

Thinking that since we had some extra time to service the car we weren't too concerned with the fact that we had only three crew members to do the job and in fact Terry himself dove under the car to do the bottom end job. We did use up a bit of extra time due to a couple of broken push rods and one damaged lash adjuster that had to be replaced. One cylinder head that was stuck on the head studs didn't help the turn around either!

When we headed up to the line for the final round we had fired up the motor on Nitro only long enough to check for fuel system and oil leaks, never seated the clutch or re-adjusted the valves.

The second pass was great! We had really nice track conditions and the car responded well to our changes. Terry left the line and was simply gone, a nice straight pass with full power to about 900 once again. When we saw the fire go out early we thought he had clicked it off. The time came up on the board at 5.12 seconds, a new record!

Final checks of the engine revealed another broken push rod, the cause of another broken blower belt. Overall the engine was in great shape and the computer data indicates that we were on a high 4 second run if it had made to the finish line.

Thank you to all of the staff and the great fans! We appreciate the great support given to us on the return road in front of the grandstands and all of the fans that came by our pit after the run to congratulate us.

On a final note, the suspect push rods can be found in the trash somewhere at the track, Next year, we'll bring new ones!!

Carl Spiering Motorsports Eaton Cutler-Hammer captures first PMRA event

"It wasn't pretty but I made it"

CAYUGA, ON (May 21, 2005) - The first Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA) event was a great success, especially for inaugural winner Carl Spiering of Jordan Station, Ontario.

Spiering, in the Eaton Cutler-Hammer sponsored 1963 Chevrolet Corvette, bested the field of 14 cars, including 2004 IHRA Pro Modified World Champion Mike Janis of Lancaster, New York, and Canadian ace Al Billes of Barrie, Ontario.

In the final run at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Spiering met with Billes, who debuted his new Summit Racing 2005 Dodge Stratus Pro Modified. Billes, running the Oddy Racing-entry, qualified the new car number one for the Darren Mayer Performance Engineering Top Qualifier Award in the event with low ET and speed.

But severe tire shake took Billes out of contention in the final as Spiering motored to a winning 6.33-second, 225.41 mph pass. "The track was awesome tonight, said Spiering after the win. "Our Eaton Cutler-Hammer Corvette was working good. The final was a little slippery. It wasn't pretty but I made it."

Jim Oddy was also impressed with the TMP surface. "This track had teeth tonight," said the Buffalo-area Pro Modified builder. "I wish we could take it from race to race." In round one action, Terry Brown of Caledonia, Ontario, took out Joe Boniferro (Bear's Performance Products Consistent Qualifier) of Niagara Falls Ontario, Spiering beat Jack Grainy of North Tonawanda, New York, Billes beat Kenmore, New York's Joe Lilienthal, and in the upset of the meet, Lutch Querin of Toronto, Ontario drove his 2002 Camaro to a big upset win over world champion Janis, whose 2005 Stratus suffered from severe tire shake.

In the next round, Brown started way too early, red-lighting, and giving the round to Billes, while Querin gave Spiering a hard time, but Spiering's strong and straight 6.29-second, 227.04 pass over the Camaro's 6.74-second, 205.79 mph run put the Camaro on the trailer.
